I get eye strain from not using dark mode, so I use "Monokai Vibrant" https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=s3gf4ult.monokai-vibrant as a theme with a FiraCode variant https://github.com/kencrocken/FiraCodeiScript as my font. Actually, the contrast is super (absurdly) high on everything except code comments. My apologies that you found it hard to read!
