I love argument and counterpoint, and you bring up a great point about “VIP service.” It’s not something I’ve personally ever experienced on the phone, but I’ve read enough articles about sales to know that the phone is still important to many salespeople for building a personal connection and providing that level of concierge service.

I think I’m mostly thinking of times when I don’t want “VIP service” — I want to complete a transactional item from a to-do list, usually involving scheduling. Personally, it doesn’t matter to me that my dentist’s secretary remembers who I am on the phone while trying to schedule me; after all, won’t she still remember me when I go to my appointment tomorrow?
