I finished a book yesterday called Plot Gardening that had a lot of great tips on planning novel-length stories using Dan Harmon's "story circle," story beats (1+ per chapter) that are either action or reaction beats coupled with a single emotion, and plot branching to examine possible changes to the plot before committing to writing the entire thing.
