I moved to Mexico 3 months ago to cut my living expenses (and enjoy Caribbean Life after one too many HGTV episodes). So I've been able to be a lot more flexible with my work opportunities.
I recently took an SEO ghostwriting opportunity, which looks to be mostly writing about writing. I initially got into blogging on Medium to switch careers back to web development, as I used to be a webmaster for the School of World Studies at VCU. But, as a software engineer yourself I'm sure you're aware that it's difficult to get an engineering role without the right title (well, outside of the biggest companies).
Instead I've kept writing, and I've been approached to do Developer Advocacy / Developer Relations roles, but I like having control over what I write about. So the vanity numbers are great for "Technical Writer" roles like that, whether contract or full-time. At the moment I'm focused on building up more of an audience on Medium and not worrying too much about landing a full-time role. I'd enjoy full-time developing, too, but only in a mid-level / senior / architect role. I get interviewed for those jobs sometimes, but I'm not a particularly competitive candidate.
Really it's a great question, and I'd love to chat on video for 15 minutes sometime to really get into it and compare notes if you'd be interested in that. 😁
