When I first learned about the biological basis for depression in mammals, I found it super inspirational. Rats become depressed following chronic random stress, typically because of social defeat in overcrowded laboratory settings or following repeated simulated drowning. I can imagine a rat, after several weeks of social defeat and inability to mate, ruminating to determine whether it's worth finding another colony of rats.
